Have you ever wondered how MTN charges you per data when you surf the web or how your internet data is spent? if yes, then this article was specifically written for you. After reading this article you will know how every byte of your internet data is spent so that you can start managing your internet data.

Many people often subscribe for a daily. weekly or monthly internet data bundle and just within few minutes of browsing they recieve a message  from MTN that their MTN data is finish. This is because they don,t know how MTN charges them per data when they browse the internet and so they end up depleting their allocated internet data volume very quickly.

Infact while i was still writing this article, my junior sister came to me to complain about her mobile internet connection. She said (in pidgin)  MTN na thief people now now so way i just subscribe  for 1 day internet connection, they di tell me say my internet connection don finish. Finish how?.

After interviewing her, i realised that she knew nothing about how MTN charges per data. So she went about downloading and streaming any file on the web.

There are 3 ways in which MTN charges you per data when you surf the web which include;

  • MTN charges you per website visit.

  • MTN also charges you per the number of files downloaded from or uploaded to a website.

  • MTN charges you per the number of music and video streaming

How MTN charges you per website visit.

After visiting a website, the amount of data that will be deducted from your allocated data volume depends on the total file size of the files on the website. A website that contains more pictures like pinterest, instagram and the likes, will cost you more data than a text based website  like this one or other blogs.

It should be noted that whenever you type the web address of a website in to your smartphone browser, your mobile browser, first has to download the files found on the website from the webserver hosting the website files, before you can be able to view the website. The larger the file sizes of the pictures and documents found on a website, the more internet data it will cost you to view the website. So a web page with a 2mb total file size will cost you 2MB.

How MTN charges you per the number of downloads or uploads.

If you download a 2MB file from a website, 2mb internet data will automatically be deducted from your allocated data volume. Lets take for example that you subscribed for a 50MB internet data, after downloading a 2MB music file from a website, your internet data balance will be 48MB. If you later download an 8MB file from another website, your internet data volume will be further reduced to 40MB. As you keep downloading files, your allocated data volume will keep reducing till it gets finished i.e. 0MB. Always check the file sizes of files to make sure that a single download doesnt deplete your entire data volume.

MTN also charges you per uploads. Whenever you upload a file to a website, your internet data also reduces depending on the size of the uploaded file. For example if you upload a 2MB photo to your facebook profile, 2MB data will automatically be deducted from your allocated internet data volume. Videos often cost more internet data than images and audio (MP3) files. It will cost you 20MB data to upload a 20MB video to YouTube.

How MTN charges you per streaming.

Whenever you play a music or video online, your internet data reduces depending on the file size of the video or  music. It should be noted that whenever you are playing a video or music online, you are also simultaneously downloading the video or movie file from the webserver hosting it. The downloading part takes place behind the scene and the downloaded video is cached (stored in the cache folder of your browser). So streaming is still the same as downloading.

The longer the length of a video or movie, the larger the file size and the more internet data it will cost you to stream the video. For example it may cost you 50MB internet data for you to completely watch  a 5 minutes video on  YouTube.  You can imagine how much internet data it will cost you to competely watch a 1:30 minutes video on YouTube.
