A Sub-domain is a free domain name (web address) that is created by adding (appending) a specific alphanumeric character in front of a domain name. For example if your domain name is www.comblog.net, you can create a free sub-domain name from your domain name by adding (associating) a specific sub-name (prefix) in front of comblog.net e.g. blogger.comblog.net. The unique prefix “blogger” that was added infront of the comblog.net domain name is a sub-name and the web address “blogger.comblog.net” is a sub domain web address. The web address is called a sub-domain name because it was created from (out of the) the main domain name “comblog.net”.

It should be noted that even though a sub-domain name is created from a main domain name, it is a completely independent domain name (web address) that is capable of taking internet users to a completely different web site. Simply put,

Sub-domain web addresses can act as an entirely different web address (domain name). For example after creating the sub-domain name blogger.comblog.net, i can decide to create another website or blog with that sub-domain name. So after registering a domain name (yourdomainname.com), you can create so many sub-domain names (sub-web addresses) from your main domain name and use the sub-domains to set up many different kinds of websites. So you don’t need to register a new domain name whenever you want to create a new website. After I registered my domain name comblog.net, I have created sub-domain names like domainnamebook.comblog.net, howtostartablog.comblog.net and many other sub domains from my main domain name. If you type the above sub-domains in your browser, you will be taken to different web sites with contents not related to the content found on the COMBLOG.NET website.
Nowadays, almost every web master makes use of a sub-domain names. For example, the sub-domain “maps.google.com” is a sub-domain of google.com that takes you directly to the Google Maps website (a website with content that differs from that found at google.com). Sub-domain names are also popularly used to create the translated version of a web site. For example if you visit most websites, you will see a country flag icon that you can click if you wish to translate the content of the website. If you click on the French flag icon, you will be redirected to a sub-domain like “fr.godaddy.com” (the French version of the website) or en.godaddy.com (the French version of the site).

Like I mentioned earlier, Sub-domain names are free domain names i.e. after creating a sub-domain name, you won’t be expected to pay any renewal fee for the sub-domain name. Even if you create a million sub-domain names from your main domain name, it won’t cost you anything. However your sub-domain names will only be active (valid) as long as the main (host) domain name is active. For example if you fail to pay the annual renewal fee for your main domain name and as a result of that, your main domain name expires, all the sub-domain name that were created from (out of) the main (host) domain name will also expire simultaneously. Sub-domain names are just like parasites and the main domain name the host. For example if comblog.net expires, all its sub-domains will also expire simultaneously.
